विकल्प न तो प्रमाण है और न ही विपर्यय। विकल्प एक आभासी ज्ञान है जो सुनने से ज्ञान जैसा अनुभव कराता है लेकिन वास्तविक रूप से वहां कोई वस्तु,व्यक्ति या परिस्थिति होती नहीं है। यह केवल शाब्दिक होता है, ध्वनित होता है।
विकल्प एक ऐसी शक्ति है जहां शब्दों के माध्यम से कुछ भी कल्पित किया जा सकता है जिसकी कोई वास्तविक सत्ता नहीं होती।
शास्त्रों में इसे अनेक उदाहरणों से प्रस्तुत किया गया है जैसे-
कहीं कहीं पर विशुद्ध व्यवहार के लिए भी विकल्प वृत्ति का प्रयोग होता है और कहीं कहीं अज्ञानवश यह वृत्ति निर्मित हो जाती है। क्लिष्ट और अक्लिष्ट भाव से विकल्प वृत्ति दुख और सुख देने वाली होती।
Fictitious modification of mind or knowledge through hearing is devoid of the object in reality and it is neither a proof nor thought constructs. It is virtual knowledge which sounds like knowledge but in reality does not correspond to its original form or state. This is only textual or implied.
Such is the power of fictitious perception that on mere hearing words makes you imagine some substance, but in reality it is devoid of content.
There are many such examples in Shashtras/scriptures like:
Many times the fictitious modification of mind is used for pure behaviour and on other occasions this habit is formed due to ignorance. Based on its complicated or simple nature, the misperceptions cause sadness or happiness.
सूत्र: शब्दज्ञानानुपाती वस्तुशून्यो विकल्पः
शब्द अपनी महिमा से बस शाब्दिक ज्ञान कराता है
वस्तुतः वस्तु रहित वह ज्ञान, विकल्प वृत्ति कहलाता है
जैसे आकाश का फूल कहें तो, कुछ भी ज्ञान कहां होता है?
शब्द मात्र ही शेष रह जाते, वस्तु का भान कहां होता है?
