As informed in the previous sutra practice and detachment are two elements which can organize and then put a stoppage to the thoughts. Now Maharshi Patanjali will make the pupils understand the form and real meaning of practice.
Practice is the steadiness of effort or attempt for the attainment of thorough condition of our mind via practice and detachment.
In the language of Yoga Darshana, the condition of mind which lacks in action, passion and darkness is called ‘stithi or quietness’. Undaunted courage and spirited endeavor is essential for it, without which the practitioner cannot attain the said quietness.
The question now is: Why strength and enthusiasm are essential?
Strength is of three kinds:
Physical strength/power increases with regular Yoga practice, exercise, hard work and daily activities.
Mental strength increases by having good thoughts governing our actions and by fulfillment of small resolutions.
The meditator deeply experiences an increase in spiritual power when a man’s speech and action become one due to the increased physical and mental power.
When these three powers start developing in the practitioner, then enthusiasm also starts growing in the same proportion. Gradually it becomes a practice and starts controlling heart, intellect, senses and mind. It is so natural that the klisht thoughts of the meditator get burnt to ashes/destroyed and only aklisht thoughts remain which start his upward journey.
Strength/power alone, without enthusiasm, is of no use. Though, it is not possible to be physically, mentally and spiritually strong without enthusiasm. Enthusiasm always accompanies these three strengths or in other words these three powers are always accompanied by enthusiasm.
When the meditator starts experiencing power and enthusiasm then he should be alert enough to use it for making progress in Yoga. Ignorance, on how to use it, can cause problems.
Progress in physical life is possible through power and enthusiasm and the same can also be used in inner life to be stoic.
Power and enthusiasm are called practice here. If a meditator has acquired physical and mental power through constant yoga practice, good eating habits and behaviour then let us look at how he can adopt these in his life:
The meditator has to be alert to practice many different things. These practices not only make his life beautiful but the meditator moved ahead on the path of Yoga. He starts succeeding in controlling his thoughts. Deep practice along with ease of detachment, will gradually lead to respectable position in Yoga.
