Let us now talk about the fifth and the last vritti, which is called smriti by Maharshi Patanjali. According to Yoga Darshana smriti is retention of past experiences of your life. Remembering a two year old incident of helping an old woman cross the road is called the last and fifth vritti in Yoga Darshana.
authentic commentary on Yoga Darshana is by Vedvyas. According to which our mind (heart, intellect & arrogance) remembers both knowledge and object. The knowledge, other than the form of an object, indicates the most natural form of the object and the incident related to it. And then it inculcates sacraments (sanskaras) according to the object or knowledge. Then the same sanskara results in memory ie tadrup smriti.
The three aforementioned stages are:
memories in waking state are real and memories in dreams are imaginary. So these memories causing pain, happiness and temptation are worth leaving. All the vritties including memory are obstacles in attaining the highest state of absorption. So the meditator should prevent them through practice and detatchment.
The memories which take you to knowledge, detachment, leisure and religion are not roadblocks but are helpful in meditation. At the right time these memories also get easily controlled through meditation only.
