Maharshi Patanjali has defined Yoga as Chitt vritti nirodh. In Yogasutra he has described Yoga and its eight components in detail for complete welfare (kaliyan) and physical, mental and spiritual purity.The eight components of Yoga should not be taken as different steps. It is eight dimensional route and all dimensions need to be practised simultaneously:
1. Yama: five social moral lawsAasana – Aasana is the third component of the eight parts of Yoga. According to Maharshi Patanjali the bodily posture in which one feels comfortable and happy is called Aasana. Maharshi Patanjali has not specified the number of aasanas but according to the light thrown on Hatha yoga there are as many aasana as the number of organisms on this earth and most of them are named after the organisms like markatasan (monkey pose), makarasan (crocodile pose), gomukhasan (cowface pose) etc. Aasanas are useful for good health in the following ways:
Pranayama (Breathing Technique): It means breathing technique or elaborate life span. Maharshi Patanjali has mentioned four types of breath control. While breathing, mainly three activities are performed:
5. Withdrawal of Senses (Pratyahara): Pratyahara if the fifth component of Ashtanga Yoga. Pratyahara literally means to withdraw senses from sensorial food. Senses are of two types: Sensory organs and Organs of action. Through sensory organs we feel/perceive things. Sensory organs are of the following five types:
Field: Organs of action are field specific i.e, provide knowledge of different fields. They are of five types based of the kind of field they belong to:
6. Belief or assumption:Governing mind with a fixed thought is called dhaarana. This is the sixth limb of the eight components of Patanjali Yogasutra. Aforementioned five components – Yama, Niyama, Aasana, Pranayama and Pratyahara are considered external means of Yoga. Pratyahara, Dhaarana, Dhyan and Samadhi are considered internal means of Yoga. Dhaarana word is consisted of dhri which means to acquire or hold.
According to Yoga Darshan – ‘Concentration is the fixing of the mind in one place’ (Yogasutra 3/1) i.e. fixing your mind in one specific place in or outside the mind is called dhaarana. The practice of removing senses from their respective fields (Physical beauty, taste, smell, speech and touch) and fixing them in mind through Yama, Niyama, Aasana, Pranayama and Pratyahara is dhaarana.
7. Dhyana: Dhyaan involves an activity of subconscious mind in which man focuses his mind on one specific thing or place. With reference to dhyaana use of active verbs like ‘giving’, ‘removing’, and ‘keeping’ etc. in Hindi proves the necessity of individual attempt. Through dhyaan we bring about clarity and honesty of a chosen subject at mental level.
Yogasammat dhyaan is very different from general dhyaan. The first inspires towards spiritual goal after using the power of a long period of practice while the purpose of the latter is physical. Hereby ordinary daily power comes handy. Some Indian scholars including Sampurnanad etc. consider Yogasammat as extremely developed stage of general dhyaana.
Complete detachment from all worldly activities and to be able to focus mind on one thing is called dhyaana. Meaning thereby that dhyaana is to be so engrossed in one thing that one does not remain aware of even seasons and other bodily requirements.
8. Samadhi: The ultimate stage of dhyaana is called Samadhi. When the seeker gets fully absorbed in the centre/object of meditation and loses his identity, it is called Samadhi. In Patanjali Yogasutra Samadhi is called the eigthth and the last stage.
Patanjali’s grantha has gained increased fame in modern times. This book has been translated into many languages including English. Recently it is translated inti Hebrew language.
Many commantries are written on Yogasutra. Some of the main commantaries are:
Vyasbhasya (Commentary by Vyas): The time of writing Vyas bhasya is considered prior to 200-400 CE. This is the oldest and reliable commentary on Patanjali Yogasutra.
Tattva Vaisaradi: Translation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras together with the comment or Yoga bhasya, attributed to Veda Vyasa and his explanation is called Tattva Vaisaradi of Vachaspati Misra. It was written in 841 AD.
Yogavartika: An important explanation of Yogasutra is by Vigyaanbhikshu. It is known as Yogavartika. Scholars have considered his time in the middle of sixteenth century.
Bhojvritti: Bhojvritti grantha written by famously known Dhareshwar Bhoj is considered honourable by scholars of Yoga. The duration of Bhoj reign is considered between 1075 to 1110. Some historians date it back to 16th century.
